Our roots are based with the First Congregational Church in Guilford, CT where our president Merrillyn Garcia has been the youth ministry leader for the past 9 years. Our vice president, Shawn Mohovich, has been involved for the past 4 years, and our other co-founder Sarah Garcia has been involved for 6 years. Every April we do a major service project during the student's spring break, We have helped migrant farmworkers in Florida, built a house for an elderly couple in Mississippi, and repaired roofs on the Hopi Mesa in Arizina. Two years ago we decided to expand the range of people that we offer these types of opportunities to and so we created Make A Difference, Inc. Although our work originated with a church group, Make A Difference is not a relgious organization. Our trips are open to participants from any background and when we assist a community we chose it by assessing the area with the most need and helping them regardless of religion, race, age, or geographic location. Make A Difference now organizes spring break and longer summer trips for students and young professionals looking to extend a hand and help people in need. We hope that this work will continue to grow as we offer more hands on help in the building of a brighter future one community at a time.
Make A Difference is lead by a team of skilled individuals with a variety of abilities, experience and training that enriches their work.
Make A Difference has worked with groups of all different sizes, from as small as 4 people to as large as 120 people.
The organization's work extends to impoverished communities in both rural and urban areas across the Unites States, the Carribean, and Central and South America.
Volunteers not only work in the community but they also live there and share in the life experiences of the people.
Volunteers are frequently high school and college students but there is no age limit. Participants have been as young as 13 and as old as 60.
Make A Difference strives to cut across boundaries created by racism, disability, religion, politics and socioeconomic status by bringing diverse people and communities together.
