| Come participate in a Service Project hosted by Make A Difference partnering with Ling-Jiou Mountain Buddhist Society for a 14-day, cultural journey to Taiwan. Here you will enjoy the energetic and very busy capital city, Taipei – one of the great food capital’s of the world. Take in 5 millennia of Chinese art history at the National Palace Museum, shop in the eccentric night markets including the famous Snake Alley, and ascend to the top of Taipei 101 – the world’s tallest building at over _ mile high. The Museum of World Religions begins the next phase of our journey where you will see how LJS has broken down religions barriers by showing the commonality of all religions. Traveling from the hustle and bustle of Taipei to the northeast coast of Taiwan will be a remarkable change. Here we will have a rare opportunity to stay at the LJS Buddhist Monastery located on the edge of a cliff almost 400m above the Pacific Ocean. Take in the gorgeous views, live among devout Buddhist monks and nuns, witness the early morning chanting, and learn about a different way of living from Venerable Dharma Master Hsin Tao himself. While deeply engaged in the Buddhist lifestyle, we will participate in various volunteer work projects in and around the monastery where we will have an opportunity to teach, build, and provide home repair assistance for the surrounding community in need. Next we will travel south to Hualien – an Eastern, coastal town, where we will provide further assistance to an indigenous Taiwanese tribe. Here we will live and work amongst a small community of the original ancestors of the country whose culture and longevity are being threatened by poverty, alcoholism, and declining job growth. Working together with the leaders of this indigenous community, we will engage in various work projects and learning seminars that are an important part of securing their future. Here you will also see the famous Tayroko Gorge and have a chance to witness the great Liwu River carving a marble-walled canyon deep into the earth – a process started over 4 million years ago.
